Starcraft 2, easily the most popular role playing game out there to release to this day. About hundreds of thousands of players are playing on Battle.net (mult-player) everyday, challenging foes to a epic battle to the finish where one player stands on top. There is no question that there has been a frenzy around the release of StarCraft 2. Well, actually it is no real surprise because many people have been waiting 12 years for this release if you are a follower of StarCraft Brood War that is.

Like the original StarCraft, there remains units that you may be familiar with like marines, zealots, zerglings, hydralisks, and so on. But at the same time, StarCraft 2 comes packed with a new force of unique units that players can use to counteract their opponent if they are a skilled players. Every new unit that Blizzard has come up with like for example, the queen, banshees, infestors, vikings, ravens, and so on, have their strengths and weaknesses. And once you have got your hands a hold of StarCraft 2, it is quite apparent of what those strength and weaknesses are. For example, the viking. The viking and switch from being land attackers to being air attackers, but the thing is that consequently, they cannot attack both air and land units at the same time. It has to be one or the other. This is one of the many ways Blizzard has brought a compelling group of units to enter into the new StarCraft 2 arsenal and developed a new way of battle for loyal StarCraft fans.

In conjunction, no doubt has the graphics for StarCraft 2 gotten better when compared to its descender, Brood War. What makes StarCraft 2 so compelling to have is the legacy the original StarCraft has created for the trademark, StarCraft. Without the wide speed support from its’ loyal fans from all over the world, StarCraft wouldn’t be as prominent to this day. It has become more than a game. It has become a game where many compete to win cash prizes and meet other gamers alike. You can say that StarCraft itself has created a cult and transformed how people see competitive gaming today. For example, the GSL is the world’s biggest StarCraft 2 tournament that has a first place cash prize of 80 grand. That sure is a lot of money. Maybe if you get good at the game, you may rise to the top and claim a spot as the GSL champion.

Okay, let’s talk more about what I think about the game. I have been a long fan of the original StarCraft and to this day, I still play Brood War simply because it is mind mind boggling what players are capable of doing through that game. Everyday, I learn new things from playing Brood War and that inspires me to get better and play more. The thing is with StarCraft 2 is that I feel something is missing. I feel like I could do everything a professional player could do that plays for a living. But with the original StarCraft, that was not the case. Although I love the stunning graphics of the new StarCraft, if it doesn’t capture the old essence of the original StarCraft and what it made so prominent today, personally, I don’t think it is a worthy release to its epic legacy the original StarCraft left behind. However, no fear Blizzard. You still have two more expansions to make up for the first edition of StarCraft 2. The thing is with StarCraft 2 is that after a while, it gets repetitive and boring no matter what type of unique playing style you are playing with. Whether it be cheese, all around standard play, it gets pretty boring after a while. Since the day I hopped onto the bandwagon in the year 07 and purchased my first StarCraft Battle Chest, I have never had this problem. I would do things a player would normally not do, just to have more playing time to practice more online to get better. But after playing StarCraft 2, even after a hour, I don’t mind not playing. That is a bad thing especially since I think I have the most leeway to a game that I have been a long time fan of. In conclusion, because I am along time fan of the original StarCraft and because I don’t want to taint the epic StarCraft 2 legacy, I rate this game a 4.

To sum it, up, I really hope Blizzard is reading this and gets their inspiration back. Back when they were developing the original StarCraft when they were a moderately known gaming company that was insulted by the creation of StarCraft of being a cheap knockoff of WarCraft 3 and was referred to “Orcs in Space.” Look what happened to the game analysts were talking that they referred to as being a cheap knockoff to WarCraft 3.

StarCraft 2, probably the biggest role playing game to exist, plans on creating it’s first expansion from it’s previous descender, StarCraft Brood War. That expansion has been officially been called, “The Heart of the Swarm.” This expansion for StarCraft 2 features a brand new campaign from a zerg’s point of view and will showcase new units that had been never seen before. Many people believe that Heart of the Swarm will be an exhilarating ride as once it is finally released, it will give die-hard fans about 33% more of the story behind StarCraft – giving loyal StarCraft fans about 66% of the story.

Rumors have it that Blizzard will be releasing StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm around sometime in 2012. Although Blizzard has not yet confirmed that rumor because they refuse to comment on the issue, analysts have said that you can count on the game being released sometime around that period. So if you are a die-hard StarCraft fan, don’t keep your hopes up yet. As we all know, Blizzard has a tendency to prolong game releases for StarCraft, if you know what I mean.

From the last Blizzcon, they have announced a few candidates to become units to join the swarm army. You can take a look at what they may have in store for whats to come in the Heart of the Swarm.

Since the release of the first StarCraft, it has been a game that no other game could compete with at its time. The beauty of the original StarCraft and what make it such a prominent product for Blizzard today is the whole concept behind StarCraft. That, it takes skills, knowledge, strategy, and focus to be able to win a game. The game itself to this day is still fun to play and compelling to watch. The legacy the original StarCraft left behind is unmatched by any other game. I have not yet to play a role playing game that could match the legacy that the original StarCraft has left behind. Competitive StarCraft players even play for a living, despite the fact that their salary may be low, just for the love of the game. To this day, I am still a StarCraft Brood War player and I will forever will be. Although I have my hands on StarCraft 2 the first edition, I have my fingers crossed for whats to come in StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm because StarCraft 2 have yet to capture that essence of the original StarCraft that made it cool, edgy, fun, and just a true beauty that made the original StarCraft everything it was.

If the Amazon ratings for StarCraft 2 is 1.7 stars away (3 stars) from it’s previous descender (4.7 stars), Brood War. It must mean that I am not the only one that feels something is missing and that, Blizzard still has work cut out for them.

I have high hopes for StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm to be everything that the first edition of StarCraft 2 was not.

I have long obtained StarCraft Brood War and for all the times I’ve have obtained it, I must admit, it was certainly a blast. Whenever playing online or just playing the campaign, the experience is always an enjoyable time because not only is it competitive, the entire game play is simply amazing when it comes to unit diversity, infrastructure, and game balance.

The best thing yet is that this game is dated from 1998, almost a 12-year old game. When I purchased it, I bought it off Amazon when the StarCraft Battle Chest was on sale for only $10 – that was the best $10 I have ever spent and I’d bet you thought so too.

The fact that every unit in the game has its own unique feature like how the high templar cannot attack, however, when updated with Psoinic Storm, it is one of the deadliest units in the game (especially for hydras). The game play is so amazing and when there are times where you feel that you are an absolute advantage, any certain type of screw up can swing the game into the opponent’s favor at any time.

So, as you may guess, StarCraft is a very deadly game that is still enjoyable and can nonetheless still match up to the current day games. Undisputed, it is no wonder why StarCraft was an enourmous hit at the time of 1998. Now it is 2010, and I still play the game. Not to forget to say, it is the number 1 game in Korea and is considered a sport there. It is simply one of the most competitive games that requires skill, strategy, mind games, intensive micro, and macro management. This game is not for the kind hearted. Be prepared to play with other competitive gamers on B-net, or be prepared to be rolled over.

If you like strategy games, this game is a must no matter what date it came out. It is a must for your collection of games.
